Both the computer and its successor, the Byzantine sundial/calendar, are examined and analyzed for the first time as to the full extent of their influence, while the possibilities of a mechanical revolution during the Hellenistic period are highlighted. These two mechanisms, both of which included a differential gear, sealed the history of mechanical evolution for 2,000 years.
