VIEIRA JUNIOR

Itamar Vieira Junior was born in 1979 in Salvador, in the state of Bahia in northeastern Brazil. He studied Geography and holds a PhD in Ethnic and African Studies.

His research has focused on the formation of quilombo communities in the inland regions of northeastern Brazil.

 

He worked for many years at INCRA, the Brazilian government agency responsible for agrarian reform, land redistribution, and rural land management.

In 2018, he won the Leya Award in Portugal for his novel Torto Arado, which was published in 2019 and became one of the most successful literary works of recent years.

He has also authored the short-story collections Dias (2012), A oração do carrasco (2017), and Doramar ou a odisseia(2021), as well as the novel Salvar o fogo (2023), which will be published in Greek by Aiolos Publishers.
