WOODY
GUTHRIE
Woody Guthrie (Woodrow Wilson “Woody” Guthrie, 1912–1967) was an iconic figure of American folk music and is considered a spiritual father to many artists of the genre, including Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Bruce Springsteen, Pete Seeger, Jerry Garcia, and others.
His song “This Land Is Your Land” became an anthem for every progressive American and has inspired, and continues to inspire, social struggles and movements.
Guthrie’s musical legacy includes more than three thousand songs, covering a wide-ranging repertoire of historical, political, cultural, regional, spiritual, narrative, and children’s themes. He was also a writer and visual artist. His writings, paintings, and recordings are preserved at the Library of Congress, the Smithsonian Institution, and the Woody Guthrie Archives.
He was often seen with the phrase “This Machine Kills Fascists” written on his guitar. Guthrie was sympathetic to various communist groups in the United States. He was married three times and had eight children.
