A collection of illustrated stories unlike any other: an exchange student who may in fact be an alien, a water buffalo who knows the neighborhood better than anyone, a hidden room perfect for escaping into, and detailed instructions on how to build your own pet are just some of the tales in Stories from Remote Suburbs by the acclaimed Australian author and illustrator Shaun Tan, published for the first time in Greece.
Shaun Tan, the renowned illustrator and writer, was born in 1974 in Fremantle and grew up in Perth, Western Australia. He studied Fine Arts and English Literature. As a teenager, he began creating illustrations based on science fiction and horror stories for small-circulation magazines.
He became internationally known for his illustrated books that explore social, political, and historical themes through a surreal and dreamlike visual style. His works, including Tales from Outer Suburbia, The Rabbits, The Red Tree, The Lost Thing, and The Arrival, have been translated across Europe, Asia, and South America and are enjoyed by readers of all ages.
Shaun Tan has also worked as a theatre set designer and contributed to film production, including Pixar’s WALL·E. In 2011, he was awarded the prestigious Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award for his overall contribution to children’s literature, among numerous other major international distinctions.
Do you remember the water buffalo at the end of our street? Or that diver in a diving suit we once met near the underpass? Do you know why dogs bark in the dead of night?
The uniquely talented Shaun Tan, an award-winning Australian illustrator and author of children’s books, reveals everyday stories set in remote suburbs — moments we often fail to notice: handmade pets, adventures for soon-to-be-married couples, helpless sea creatures, tiny exchange students, and secret, pitch-dark rooms filled with celebration and joy.
