About 2,500 years ago, Plato wrote a story without imagining that people would continue to engage with it so intensely down to the present day. It is the account of Atlantis, a continent that sank beneath the sea. The story, as transmitted in the Timaeus and the Critias, was it entirely fictional, or did it conceal some real historical core?
Peter James, a well-known archaeologist and historian, in his thorough and well-documented study of Atlantis, addresses this question by offering his own interpretation.
Peter James describes himself as a “general scientist” who studies the ancient Near East and the Eastern Mediterranean. He graduated in Ancient History and Archaeology from the University of Birmingham and completed postgraduate research in the Department of Ancient History at the University of London.
He has published numerous articles on ancient chronology, technology, and the history of science, in both academic and popular journals. He is the principal author of “Centuries of Darkness.” He has also written “The Sunken Kingdom”(1995), which was translated and published by AIOLOS under the title “Atlantis – The Sunken Kingdom,” and—together with Nick Thorpe—“Ancient Inventions” (1994) and “Ancient Mysteries” (1999).*
It challenges and dismantles all the views of Atlantis theorists, leading us to new directions through its own arguments. The vivid narrative, rich material, and scientific treatment of the evidence provided make the book unique and rewarding for those who delve into it.
