Have you ever imagined where a toy you lost might end up? For example, a balloon that slipped away while you were holding it, a doll you left in the park, or a fluffy toy dog that fell out of your bicycle basket.
Ah, it might have gone to the most impossible places!
For instance, Michael, the son of Tolkien, the storyteller, lost his black-and-white lead toy dog on the beach, and it, thrilled with joy, went everywhere imaginable! What adventures it had! It reached the moon and then went down to the depths of the sea.
And how many did he meet! Wizards, fairies, whales, spiders, even enchanted dogs who had the same name as him: Rover-Trigiristras in Greek! (To distinguish him, he was given the name Roverandom.)
And of course, he grew wings to fly and fins to swim. And when he grew tired of all this—terrible fears, crazy adventures, unexpected events—he wanted to return to Michael. Does he manage to do so? We won’t tell you the secret: whether he was a real dog or a toy dog!
But you should know this, so you don’t despair: if you take care of and love your toys—or even your dog—then even if you lose them, they will try to find you, because they miss your love.
