ARISTOTLE AND CRETE

,

The author sheds light on Aristotle’s knowledge of Crete. The so-called “Cretan Politeia” (from Politics, Book 2) replaces the lost respective chapter of the “Politeiai” and constitutes mainly a political or polity-related approach (compared to the mainly legal-legislative one by Plato, or the mainly ethnographic and pedagogical work of Ephoros). The relevant information comes from secondary sources, perhaps from Lyceum students. Despite the general acceptance of the centralized system of Doric Crete, the philosopher from Stageira criticizes many institutions, especially the life-long office term of the “Kosmoi” (an office equivalent to the Ephors of Sparta).

The work was praised by honorable and eminent workers of science (Irmscher, Huxley etc.).
