GREEKS IN THE DISCOVERY AND EXPLORATION OF THE AMERICAS

When is the presence of Greeks in the New World first detected? This historical -and not at all philosophical- question is answered in the present work of CH.D. Lazos, which is the fruit of a three-year research effort in several Spanish archives. This research showed that the participation of Greeks in the discovery and exploration of the American continent was substantial. The first(?) such Greeks are found in the crews of Christopher Columbus, but a lot of evidence comes to light about three other important Greeks, Francisco Albo, Pedro de Candía (Petros o Kritikos) and Juan de Fuca (Ioannis Fokas). Their action was exciting and they took part in notable operations in the American continent under the orders of prominent Spanish conquistadors. All these restless Greeks who left their mark on the newly discovered continent open up an important chapter of unknown medieval history and offer us a field of research that has not been explored as much as it should have been.
