The sorcerer Alder travels from Roke to the island of Gont to find Archmage Sparrowhawk, once known as Ged. he man who was once the most powerful wizard in the Archipelago of Earthsea now lives with his wife and their adopted daughter. Alder needs his help: his beloved wife has died and visits him in his dreams calling him to the land of the dead – but now all the dead are after him, asking him to help them cross over to the world of the living, to Earthsea, something that upsets Earthsea’ s wizards.

There is something more important at stake here than the sleep of Alder, a minor sorcerer: the dragons of Earthsea have arisen to claim the land that once belonged to them. Only Tehanu, the daughter of a dragon herself, can talk to them. It may be that Alder’s dreams hold the key to the salvation of Earthsea and all its peoples.
