Unique examples of pyramidal architecture in Europe are the pyramids that have been discovered in Greece. Their form, their architecture and their positioning place some of them in the pre-Pelasgian period, although their use remains a mystery to us. The Academy of Athens has dated the construction of these buildings as far back as 2700 BC. The Greek pyramids differ from the well-known Egyptian pyramids in form and -probably- in use. Were they burial monuments, small forts, crypts, astronomical observatories or temples? Their study -minimal until now- will provide the answer and shed light on yet another unknown aspect of ancient Greek civilization.
