Having overcome terrible dangers in order to rid himself of the curse of the Black Jewel, Dorian Hawkmoon is trying to get back to Kamarg. The Runestaff has other plans for him, however. Yisselda has been kidnapped by the followers of the Mad God cult, taking her to distant Ukraine. Hawkmoon must reach the castle of the Mad God and not only save his beloved, but also take from his enemy the Red Amulet, a valuable aid against the forces of the Dark Empire, which have already spread across Europe and threaten the defenders of Kamarg.
