ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY IN ANCIENT RHODES

,

Research on ancient Greek technology has brought to light evidence from many areas where it was particularly developed, such as, for example, Lavreotiki, Copais, Alexandria, etc. Rhodes was not included in these areas, either because there was insufficient data or because it had not been the subject of any kind of research. Here, Rhodes becomes the focus. The great historical events and projects that showcase the island of Rhodes as a place with a remarkable technological presence and development are studied and analyzed here, starting with the famous and now well-known computer, which was found in the Antikythera shipwreck, but was built in Rhodes by an unknown mathematician. Moving on, we see the siege of Rhodes by Demetrius I Poliorcetes and the number of war machines used, the Colossus of Rhodes, a 32-metre high statue and one of the Seven Wonders of Antiquity, the unknown aqueduct of Lindos, the remarkable navy of the city and other achievements that vividly show why the sophisticated Engineering and Technology of ancient Rhodes was of great importance to the whole of ancient Greece.
