“…We sailed 50,000 miles with the wind in the sails of Amalthea. After completing the circumnavigation of the globe, we continued with stops in South Africa, Namibia, Saint Helena, Brazil, Argentina, Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego, Chile, Rio, and Salvador de Bahia, returning to the Mediterranean after three years…”
Mario Bonomi – Owner and skipper of Amalthea
Mario Bonomi is the owner and skipper of the yacht Amalthea. He comes from Brescia, Italy.
He began sailing in the late 1960s and spent many years sailing across the Mediterranean, taking part successfully in major offshore racing events in the 500×2 class.
In the 1990s, Mario Bonomi repeatedly crossed the Atlantic Ocean, becoming fully accustomed to long offshore voyages.
In 2002, after leaving his business activities behind, he set sail with a few friends for the Caribbean—a journey that unfolded in a completely different way for both him and the Amalthea…
When Amalthea set sail from Trieste on a winter cruise to the Caribbean, no one imagined that within a few months she would be sailing the seas of Polynesia, and that a year later she would reach Auckland, New Zealand.
The great voyage of Amalthea reached its climax when, heading south toward Latin America, she arrived in Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego, docked in Ushuaia, rounded the legendary Cape Horn, and crossed the Chilean channels, sailing among the glaciers of the far South.
She then crossed the Pacific and, via the Strait of Magellan, returned to the Atlantic, heading north toward the Azores and the Mediterranean, eventually reaching the Aegean and the Ionian Seas, once again experiencing the beauty of Greece.
Finally, she set sail for the Northern Adriatic and Trieste, completing three years at sea across the world’s oceans.
The text is accompanied by rich photographic material, maps, and a recording of the voyage on two DVDs.
