The Tombs of Atuan is the second book in the Earthsea cycle. Here we are transported to the remote Kargish empire, where the light-skinned and warlike inhabitants worship the spirits of the Nameless Ones, their distant ancestors, and abhor magic. The Tombs of the Nameless Ones on the island of Atuan are the most sacred place of worship and is guarded by a small community of priestesses and eunuchs led by the High Priestess.

At five, little Tenar will become the High Priestess, but she will lose everything: her family, her home and her name; she will become Arha, the eaten one, a dedicated guardian of the Tombs and the cult of the Nameless Ones.

As she tries to adjust to her harsh and monotonous new life, a stranger invades the labyrinth beneath the Tombs. What does the intruder seek? What will this mean for Tenar?
