ARISTOTLE‘S CONSTITUTION OF THE ATHENIANS

,

The Constitution of the Athenians (Athenaion Politeia) by Aristotle, has been preserved almost in its entirety on a papyrus found only in 1890. Its writing and circulation is dated between 329 and 327, i.e. towards the end of the life of Aristotle himself and his student, Alexander the Great, and also that of the entire Classical period. He justifies, by describing the genesis and development of Athens and radical democracy, that, indeed, “man is by nature a political animal”, which is also evident in Aristotle’s Politics.

This is the author’s second book on the Stagirite, following Aristotle and Crete published alongside Plato and Crete as part of the same series.
