PLATO AND CRETE

,

With this work, assistant professor Andreas Panagopoulos proves that Wilamowitz’ s statement that “Plato hardly knew more about Crete than the average man of his time” was rather unfortunate. The 58 Platonic passages of “cretological” content and their analysis show that he Doric Crete very well, perhaps even possessing first-hand knowledge. Here he does not use History as an “ancilla philosophiae”. As a mature legislator and social reformer, he is well aware of all three levels of reality on the island and proposes institutions that still concern humanity (not only philosophically and historically). The three levels are a) the present (Doric), b) the past (Minoan) and c) the future (the legislative creation of a new city-state).

The work was praised by Greek and international critics and was the reason for the author being asked to write a review for the international literary magazine The Classical World.
