COMING UP FOR AIR

,

George Bowling, forty-five, mortgaged, married with children, is an insurance salesman with an expanding waistline, a set of false teeth – and a desperate desire to escape his dreary everyday life and the fears that haunt him – the imminent WWII and everything that will follow: hunger, unemployment, repression, tyranny. So he decides to escape for a while by returning to his hometown, a paradise in the countryside, with ponds, fishing and memories of teenage romances, to catch his breath and deal with all of the above.

What we have here in Coming up for Air (1939) is Orwell with a subtle, wry sense of humor, amusing and enjoyable. The seeds for his famous novels, 1984 and The Animal Farm, are here, in a novel that is as delightful as it is prophetic.
