VOYAGE TO AMAZON (VOYAGE SUR L’AMAZONE)
Discoveries & TravelCharles Marie de La Condamine, a French mathematician, tells us about the legends, traditions and customs, flora and fauna, culture and religions he encountered in Amazonia and the surrounding areas, when he led a scientific expedition from 1735 to 1745 to map the Amazon and the meridians of the Earth, at the behest of King Louis XV of France.
In 1743 and 1744, while exploring the Amazon, he discovered caoutchouc, natural rubber which the Indians already used extensively, and he knew of quinine, both of which are very familiar to all of us today. Although his work is important, La Condamine might not have felt so proud if he had known what fate awaited the Amazon rainforest in later years. He is still one of the first to use their scientific knowledge for the benefit of the Europeans, and at the expense of a region that was still virgin and full of wealth for adventurers of all kinds.
