It is fortunate that H.P. Lovecraft decided to write this history, criticism and aesthetics essay on the literature of horror. Not only because he informs us clearly and comprehensively about the origins, the authors and the evolution of the literary genre, but, above all, because he names those who influenced him or whom he admired, as well as his views on a variety of subjects that appear in his stories. Although he doesn’t mention the greatest horror writer -himself- at all, he tells us about the formation of his own art through the study of the work of writers like Walpole, Stoker, E. A. Poe, Machen, Dunsany, thus making his unparalleled stories more understandable.
