NAUTICAL TECHNOLOGY IN ANCIENT GREECE
Ancinent Greece - Byzantium, History & CultureFrom 8000 BC until the end of the Hellenistic period, the Greeks became so skilled in the art of navigation that for centuries they were the masters of the Mediterranean. Their strength was based on the knowledge of astronomy, which contributed, in time, to the development of geography, cartography, pelagodromia (sailing in the open sea), and shipbuilding. It was also based on a multitude of nautical instruments, charts, compass roses and other navigational aids such as the peripli. For the first time, a comprehensive presentation of these achievements that contributed to the consolidation of the naval tradition of the Greeks is attempted. Several of these achievements are unknown or almost unknown: compasses(?), anemoscopes, astrolabes, compass roses, sundials, dromometers, celestial spheres, peripli and stadiasmi are some of these achievements, the presentation of which is based on a multitude of scientific works.
