The stars, the Earth, the Sun, the Moon, the whole universe began to concern man very early on. In the beginning they were worshipped as deities by many ancient peoples, and of course by the ancient Greeks. After the myths came knowledge. The pre-Socratic philosophers in ancient Greece were the first to seek the truth behind mythology and attempted to provide answers “with evidence” to the vexing questions that kept them awake. Even today, when the universe has revealed its secrets to us, the ingenuity of the ancient Greeks, their evidentiary reasoning, their measurements and their conclusions, which formed the starting point for the sciences of astronomy, geometry, mathematics and their various applications in everyday life, causes awe and admiration. Twenty of the most interesting such measurements are analyzed and commented on here. Their presentation is based exclusively on the ancient sources and is presented for the first time in modern Greek.
