J.R.R. Tolkien was obsessed with correspondence, as seen from the countless letters he sent to his family, his friends, his editor, his readers.
When he refers to his greatest works, The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit and The Silmarillion, but also to his lesser-known works, his letters become quite lengthy.
From these letters and the extensive comments of the editors, we learn a great deal about his work and the inspiration for his stories; about his family and friendships, his professional career, his views on the trending issues of his time. Here we have, then, one of the greatest writers of the 20th century in his personal, and often confessional, writings.
