ERT, Byzantine Vesper by Luigi De Pascalis
Every book has its own path and the fact that Byzantine Vesper is now on the shelves of Greek bookshops is the result of a series of choices, but also of circumstances and chance events that contributed to its publication in Greek.
At the end of 2018, when the managers of the publishing house Aeolos asked me to recommend an Italian historical novel set in the Roman or Byzantine period, I had not read Luigi De Pascalis’s books. I had only heard of him, as he is well known in Italy for his writing in the field of historical and noir fiction.
After much sifting, and when the number of books I found interesting had been reduced to a dozen or so titles, I happened to come across an interview with De Pascalis in which he expressed his difficulty in understanding the European Union’s attitude to the Greek crisis and did not hesitate to compare the situation with Europe’s destructive policy during the period of the Fall of Constantinople.
