CELESTINA

,

Between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, The Tragicomedy of Calisto and Melibea, or La Celestina, (as it was popularly called), appears in 15th-century Spain (the century of the discovery of America, the persecution of people of other religions and the Inquisition) as a pioneering humanist work whose daring erotic element amazes and excites readers. Two lovers, Calisto and Melibea, break the rules of platonic courtly love and Christian morality. It is a sinful love affair that will not have a happy ending. Fernando de Rojas creates a dangerous situation: the protagonists resort to pimping and witchcraft, and the play is full of situations and words that are bold for the time. But when the Holy Inquisition takes a closer look at the work of the “suspect” – due to his Jewish descent – Rojas, they will leave it untouched. Sinners all die without having time to confess – they have paid for their mortal sin.
