Aspidistra is a houseplant, particularly popular among the middle classes of Victorian England (1850-1900) because of its minimal requirements for thriving. It was so popular that every self-respecting home was required to have an aspidistra in the window.

Gordon Comstock, however, hates aspidistras because of what they symbolize: middle-class respectability. In the same way he hates money, which everyone worships as a god.

He thus chooses a job with no particular rewards, resulting in a life of misery and misery, which deprives him of all creativity and inspiration from the poetic vein he believes he possesses.
